While Western is not currently on ConnectU, it is a supported university on Thefacebook. ConnectU has over 200 supported universities. Thefacebook has more than two million users and 430 supported universities.

"I think (Thefacebook) is so popular because it's versatile," Hughes said. "Different students use Thefacebook in different ways, but in general, college students return to the site to find information on their peers, to make connections with friends and acquaintances and to communicate with one another. It's a reference tool and a means for communication. I think that combination, and the fact that it's fun to use, keeps people coming back."

Hundreds of Western students access Thefacebook daily. They use it to talk to old friends and meet new ones. Western has over 1,000 groups on Thefacebook that students can join.

"I chose to join Thefacebook because one of my friends from high school insisted that it was the most exciting form of entertainment when you are trying to avoid studying," said Elyse Simcock, freshman special education major. "I am a member of 54 groups. When I log in, I check my messages and write some as well. I usually check Thefacebook at least twice a day."

Some students use Thefacebook so often that they consider themselves addicted.

"I mostly use it to talk to all of my old friends that I don't see anymore and to make new ones," said Kathy Kochinsky, freshman business major, who has been using Thefacebook for several months and is a member of approximately 130 groups. "I definitely used to be addicted when I first got it. I was on it all the time, but now it's just something to check once in a while."

Kochinsky said she thinks that Thefacebook is a fad.

"Just like Beanie Babies or whatever else comes and goes, once everybody does it you have to do it because it is the cool thing," Kochinsky said.

According to Kochinsky, she believes a lot of people would be mad if Thefacebook were shut down due to this lawsuit.

"I think it is a dumb lawsuit," Kochinsky said. "Watch, we (will) have to start paying money to be on Thefacebook, just like with the whole music downloading issue."
