English department: Give graphic novels a chance

Abstract:
The Western Illinois University English department needs a class to study graphic novels. I'm not referring to those thin, monthly superhero comic books that birthed the medium decades ago. These are books that have stories that have a beginning, middle and end....

wow, this brings back some great memories! it seems like just yesterday i was watching all of these great shows, and more great shows. this homecoming theme has been so much fun!

While it is not a dedicated class, Assistant Professors Penny Kelsey and Christopher Morrow,(WIU English Dept.)have been teaching the graphic novel for a couple of years. I believe Ms. Kelsey has taught "Persepolis".

Malpass Library Assistant Librarian Gregory Phelps has donated 50 or so graphic novels to the library.

I have enjoyed graphic novels by Neil Gaiman (Sandman) for years, and Disney relies heavily on graphic novels for their bread and butter.

I googled universities that teach the graphic novel and found that Cornell, the University of Florida, and Stanford University offer this program. Closer to home, the University of Iowa has an Art Education class for teaching students how to write the graphic novel.
