Come to Western for the 'Wild Wings'

Abstract:
The end of the year is approaching, which means the time has come to show off our great town and help the recruitment efforts for our school. Pass this along to your high school buddies next time you see them.

Of course, most high school graduates have already looked into reasons why one school is better than another, but just like the real estate business says, the most important rule in searching for a college is "Location, location, location....

This is terrible. It sounds like the opinion of a freshman from the 'burbs who has not taken the time or effort to even attempt to find the good in Macomb, of which there is plenty. Sure, it might take a little investigation, but isn't that what journalists are supposed to do? Not only does this article advocate patronizing Wal-Mart (the most evil of all corporations) and ignoring the many small businesses (The Bike Shop, Vitamin Lady, Magic Dragon, Wine Cellars to name a few) that actually consist of a personal touch and descent customer service, but it is just a blatantly false article. If the writer had taken a single afternoon to walk around town (not just a quick drive down Jackson St.) and actually checked out what there is in Macomb, he would realize just how wrong this article is. This is shameful journalism. I am not even from Macomb and I'm offended. It's no wonder the Macomb community hates us; baloney like this gets printed.

I won't lie. Even though I've heard all these things before I still laughed when I read it.

Erin, lighten up. It's an opinion article.

I have to laugh when I read articles like this because it reminds me of all the students whining about how they just "have to" drink to the point of stupidity because there's just nothing to do in Macomb. Macomb is a small town, of course there's not going to be as much to do as say in Bloomington or Chicago for example. What really gets me is that probably most of these students whining that there's nothing to do probably visited the campus and town (at least I'd hope so) before deciding on coming to Western, so they should have been well informed on what Macomb does or doesn't have to offer before deciding to come here. I'd hope that it isn't because Western was the only college that would let them in, because if that's the case, Western could solve a lot of the problems and tensions between students and Macomb citizens by upping their standards.

I went to college in a small town too, but I also visited the campus and toured the city before making my choice to go there and I was well aware of what the city did or didn't have. In my case, a small town was the kind of environment I wanted. If that's not what you want and if you're going to whine about nothing to do as an excuse to get plastered, then go somewhere else. My guess would be even if a person like this goes somewhere else, you'll still find them, you guessed it, getting plastered, because the "there's nothing to do" excuse is just that, an excuse...and excuse to just do what they want to do anyway.

However, I agree on BWW. I haven't been there yet because I'm waiting for the "newness" to die down so that I don't have to wait for the second coming of Christ to sit down and get a meal.
