Abstract:
With Arlen Specter's recent hop from a moderate Republican to joining the Democrats, we as a nation have taken one step closer to becoming a communist regime.
The main premise of communism is based on common ownership and control of the means of production, as well as a government that promotes the establishment of such a society....

Ugh...what a senseless article. One-party control has absolutely nothing to do with "communism." Your case is especially diminished when you offer absolutely NO tangible examples of our move toward communism; instead just regurgitating the talk-radio rhetoric about "one-party" rule.
Did the one-party control by Republicans from 2001-2006 result in Communism, or is this opinion piece a thinly veiled shill for the Republican Party, in essence, just more whining about how not being in power is going to spell the end for the United States as we know it (when in fact, it may just spell the end for the now-irrelevant and out-of-touch Republican Party).
The truth of the matter is, with the power given to corporations by our government, the average person has already been living in a quasi-communist society, where the corporations and executives are the ownership class, and you and I are the working class. Target wants your neighborhood to build a new store? Out you go! A corporation wants to increase shareholder earnings? An employee is shown the door. This whole idea that the free-market encourages individual liberty, especially given the rights and powers that the government has granted to corporations, is really a joke if you think about it.
Nonetheless, when there ARE tangible and real examples of how the government is moving toward controlling the means of production, and you completely fail to make that point in lieu of making a weak, whining statement about one-party rule, you totally fail.
I can only question whether such partisan, fanatical rantings and hysteria were at top-of-mind for you when the Republican-controlled government passed the PATRIOT Act, started an unjustified war with Iraq and expanded the FISA exceptions allowing the government to spy on its citizens, or if your fear is merely reserved when the party that you claim to not agree with or support is in control, not to mention giving no-bid contracts to politically connected corporations, among whose shareholders were high government officials.
By the measure of one-party being in control equating to "communism," I would suppose that the opinion of the Courier's editorial staff would be that we have been "communist" since the early part of this century. You would be well-served to buy a dictionary, or use an online dictionary, and looking up the difference between fascism and communism. If nothing else, it might help you use terms in the proper context next time even if it doesn't provide you any factual items to bolster your opinion.
