Coffee was brewing, baked goods were selling and people were talking on Adams Street this weekend when Adams Street Coffee, located on 325 W. Adams St., had its grand opening.
"Our first customer jiggled the door at 5:10 (a.m.)," said Shawn Larson, an employee of Adams Street Coffee.
Larson said by mid-afternoon on Saturday, they had already had 200 to 300 customers.
"We wanted to do a soft opening," Larson said.
He added not publicizing the shop's grand opening too much gave them time to get better at making the coffee.
Andrea Hare, senior art education major, said she enjoyed everything about the coffee shop.
"They are very friendly," Hare said.
Caryn Elm, senior recreation, park and tourism administration major, agreed with Hare.
"They have good prices as well," Elm said.
Hare, who had an iced vanilla latte, and Elm, who had an iced mocha, said their coffee turned out very well and they enjoyed the décor.
"We really like the ceiling," Hare added.
Elm said her favorite part of Adams Street Coffee has to be the décor and the coffee, while Hare said it is the location.
"It's closer than going all the way to the Square," Hare said.
Hare added the only thing she would change would be to add more art.
"It's not necessarily as artsy as Little Java House or Sullivan's," she said. "But it also isn't as small."
Sarah Dunlap, junior pre-med major, was sitting in Adams Street Coffee for the second time late Saturday afternoon.
"I love it - I like the ceiling and I really like the movie (marquee)," Dunlap said.
She said she came to Adams Street Coffee in the morning, saw how spacious it was, and came back to study.
"I love Little Java House, but I feel too squished, and in the library, I feel too confined," she said, "I feel freer here."
Dunlap had a caramel mochaccino in the morning and a mocha her second time in the coffee shop and said she enjoyed both drinks.
"They used Drew Deli chocolate in my mocha … I love Drew Deli chocolate," she said.
She said the service is amazing and she will definitely come back for coffee and to study again.
"I will be here a lot," she added.
Larson said the most popular drink so far has been the vanilla latte, which is selling at a special $1.95 price. As of now, there is no ending date for the special.
Brenda Piper, manager at Adams Street Coffee, said they did great on their opening day.
"These kids want this, and they haven't let us down yet," Piper said.
Adams Street Coffee is open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to midnight and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
