Terror fight a failureEditorial
If only for a moment, President George W. Bush displayed refreshing honesty Monday when he told an interviewer on NBC's "Today" show the so-called War on Terror cannot be won.
"I don't think we can win it," Bush said. "But I think you can create conditions so that those who use terror as a tool are less acceptable in parts of the world.…

Can you hear me now?
Check it out: Do you own a cell phone? I do. I have gotten so used to it over the past seven years that at this point, I cannot imagine not owning one.
There are certain things I have gotten used to over the course of my cell-phone ownership career: charging it nightly, paying my bill every month, checking my minutes to make sure I don't go over, and most importantly, turning it off or on silent when I am in class or at the library.…

Get information now, vote later
I picked up an issue of USA Today on Thursday and read an article about how I am more likely to support John Kerry for president because I am a single woman.
According to this article, I would be more likely to support George W. Bush if I were married. It also states that there is a similar trend among men.…

Hearts should yield to cooler heads
I was sitting here at my computer when a friend from home called me to tell me that her boyfriend had yet again cheated on her.
I realized cheating has become a huge epidemic, especially for those who live in the college environment. Let's face it, a huge majority of college students, even myself, have been involved in cheating (whether you were the cheater or the cheat-ee).…

Letter to the EditorEditor's note: The following letter is in response to "An open invitation for the Higgins Hall intruder" by Michael Bertacchi, which appeared in the September 1 issue of the WC.
I am writing to respond to Michael Bertacchi's opinion titled "An open invitation for the Higgins Hall intruder" dated September 1, 2004. What an example of victim blaming! To say "they were kind of asking for it" is just the type of statement that continues the myth the victim is at fault.…

Letter to the EditorEditor's note: The following letter is in response to "What freshmen didn't hear during orientation" by Craig Finlay, which appeared in the August 27 issue of the WC.
Craig Finlay's advice to entering freshmen asked them to, "Remember: you are just one of thousands of students your professors will have likely taught here. You're forgettable; a means to a paycheck. Just as long as you're not too obvious about your slacking, you'll do fine.…

Letter to the EditorEditor's note: The following letter is in response to "That's MY Space!" by Ellen Donaghy, which appeared in the September 1 issue of the WC.
I mean no disrespect to Ms. Donaghy, but her article could almost have been redone by reversing the parties involved.
This past week (the first week of classes) I counted 9 student cars in a faculty/staff parking lot next to the library one day, and 13 student cars in the Knoblauch Hall lot the next.…

Letter to the EditorEditor's note: The following letter is in response to "Keyes too conservative for Illinois," by Patrick Garner, which appeared in the August 30 issue of the WC.
Unfortunately, The Weekly Standard writer Mr. Garner is referring to is Mike Murphy - it is he who penned the article "Keyes to a Fiasco." I would hesitate to call Mike Murphy the authority on Keyes, as he reduces Keyes simply to his race, overlooking his core values and the fact that he has a huge following among conservative voters.…
