Junior Eric Campbell was named Summit League Diver of the Year after he took first place in the men's 3-meter diving event to become the second champion for Western Illinois at the Summit League Championships Saturday.
Campbell had a score of 305.70 on the 3-meter board and joined junior teammate Anthony Holzhauer in sweeping Summit League diving events. Both divers will attend the NCAA Diving Zones in March.
In addition to Campbell's championship finish, freshman swimmer Kaley Rowe had a record performance for Western on Friday. In the 200-freestyle event, Rowe finished with a time of 1:52.12, which is the second fastest time in Summit League Championship history and the fastest record time at Western.
For the women, juniors Amanda Smith and Shannon Nelson, sophomore Taylor Martin and Rowe teamed up for the 400-yard free relay, where they took third place for Western and set a new school record. Their time of 3:33.69 surpassed the previous record time of 3:35.68 set in 2002.
Sophomore Laura Dinkelmann made up the third and final individual champion for the weekend. Dinkelmann took first place in the 200-yard fly event with a time of 2:05.69. Her time was the second fastest time in school history.
Nelson had two second-place finishes with her first in the 100-yard breaststroke event with a time of 1:06.67 and the second in the 200-yard breaststroke event with a time of 2:24.70. Both times were season-best times for Nelson.
Freshman Jeff Davis took second place in the 1,650-freestyle event with a time of 16:21.23 and was also a contributing factor for the Leathernecks in both the 400- and 800-yard freestyle relays, as Western improved season-best times in each.
The Westerwinds finished the meet behind Oakland with 568 points and second place, while the Leathernecks finished in third place behind Oakland and Centenary with 461 points.
Holzhauer and Dinkelmann were each named to the Summit League First Team All-League. Western also placed six swimmers on the second team: senior Erin Carl, Nelson, Martin, Rowe, Smith and Davis.
