On Wednesday, the Student Honors Association will host its first annual Departmental Organizations and Majors Fair in the Western Illinois University Union Grand Ballroom. SHA publicity chair Jamie Hunzinger said there will be two separate sessions - one for high school and college students and another for kindergarten through 8th grade students.

According to Carla Webb, SHA president, SHA's main goals for the fair are to show high school and college students available departments and give an opportunity to speak to Western students and promote learning to current and prospective college students.

"(The fair) is a chance for students to see what's available to them and spark their interests to see what it's like (at Western)," Webb said.

"They'll be able to see what kind of organizations we offer," Hunzinger added.

The earlier session is intended to help high school and college students decide what they want to focus on in college. Hunzinger said the latter half, directed at elementary and middle school students, will have activities appropriate to each organization.

At least 24 organizations have registered to participate. Webb said not all organizations were listed on the flier because some of them signed up after the fliers were printed, adding that recreation, park and tourism administration, health sciences and religious studies plan to show up but were not published on the fliers.

A canned food collection will also be set up to benefit Loaves and Fishes food pantry.

"That's a service activity to give back to the community," Webb said. "It's still winter and a lot of people give at Christmas, but it seems to slow down this time of year."

She added donation is encouraged but not required for attendance.

Admission to the fair is free, and everyone is invited to attend. The high school and college session is from 4 to 5 p.m. and the kindergarten though 8th grade session will be from 5 until 6 p.m.

Hunzinger and Webb aim to make the fair a yearly event.
