From the first snowfall in November or December until New Year's, the winter is usually embraced as being seasonally charming. However, by the time March rolls around, people often find themselves ready for the spring and frustrated when the snow continues to fall.
This winter is no exception. While this past weekend was refreshingly mild, the temperature is expected to drop again through the week. It seems there is no end in sight for this winter.
Though the weather is cold and the snow is still accumulating, there is no excuse to hold back from escaping your cabin fever and urging spring to arrive. Western Illinois University offers a variety of ways to stay busy while waiting for spring.
At the Spencer Student Recreation Center, you can form a team with your friends and sign up for spring intramurals including a Bocce Ball tournament, a floor hockey tournament, a volleyball league and a softball league, all of which have a registration deadline of March 18.
In addition, there is a water volleyball tournament approaching with a deadline of March 20. If intramurals aren't your thing, the swimming pool at the SRC is open Monday through Friday from 6-7:45 a.m., 11-1, 3-5, and again from 6-7 p.m., on Saturday from 1-5 p.m., and Sunday from 3-7 p.m.
There is also a wide variety of group fitness classes provided at the SRC including yoga, abdominal workouts, kickboxing, hip-hop dancing and more. There is always something to do at the Rec.
Outside of this, there are other things to do around campus. The movie theater in the University Union will soon be showing "I Am Legend", and "Sweeny Todd", both of which are worth watching.
Beginning in April, the Leathernecks baseball team will begin playing home games. Show up and support your team. Visit wiuathletics.com or wiu.edu to find more activities to take part in or attend while you take a break from studying for midterms and anxiously wait for warmer weather.
There is no excuse to be bored at Western. From academic activities to sports, the university ensures we always have something to do. So stop sulking when you notice that the snow has started again and keep yourself busy. Spring will be here soon.
