Head baseball coach Stan Hyman announced the addition of Newquist as assistant coach for the Leathernecks. Newquist joins the coaching staff after a three-year playing career at Western. He will serve as infield coach and handle chores in the first base box on game day.
"Matt is a tremendous asset to the staff and the team," Hyman said. "He's respected by the players for his tremendous accomplishments on the field and understands what they need to do to be successful against the competition we play. He also knows our system and will be able to effectively teach all aspects of the game. He's a great person and will be a great coach."
As a senior, Newquist led the Leathernecks and the Mid-Con in RBIs with 53, the fourth-best single-season mark in school history. His .292 batting average, along with 81 total bases, was third best on the team. In 2006, Newquist was named second-team All-Mid-Con after he batted .300 and played in more games than any other Leatherneck (60). He led the team in doubles (19), tied for the team lead in RBIs (42) and was second in home runs (4).
