Bostrom picks up lone win
Issue date: 3/5/08 Section: Sports
Senior Martin Boström recorded the lone singles win as the Western Illinois men's tennis team lost to Southern Illinois in its home opener, 6-1, at the Lakeside Racquet Club Sunday in Galesburg.
"We played well today," said coach Michael Hunt. "We are struggling right now with closing out games, sets and matches."
Boström continued his winning streak in his senior season, improving his record to 4-0 this spring and 10-0 in 2007-2008. Boström defeated Mariano Restrepo at the No. 2 singles position, 6-3, 6-4.
The Leathernecks (3-3) opened the match with nearly stealing the doubles point from the Salukis (4-3). Western played all three matches tough, dropping No. 1 doubles, 8-5, No. 2 doubles, 8-6, and No. 3 doubles, 8-5.
Junior Zach Frisch played Southern Illinois' No. 1 singles player, Lucas Waked, before dropping the match in three sets, 5-7, 6-1, 7-5.
"Southern is a very deep team and I think is very similar to what we'll see in an Oral Roberts," Hunt said. "So it's nice to play them tough, but we still have to keep working hard and improving in order to beat a team like this in April, when it really counts."
Western returns to action Friday and Saturday with matches at Saint Louis and UM-St. Louis.
