How we drink and vote
Issue date: 3/19/08 Section: Opinion
Drink this editorial in - it's sure to go down smooth.
A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation Poll released Tuesday suggests a voter's drinking preferences may also divulge their political preferences. The survey found that beer drinkers were more likely to vote Republican, while wine lovers were more likely to vote Democratic.
The research got the WC wondering what type of drinks best represent the candidates. For example, if you imbibed in some Jack Daniels, you may be more inclined to vote for Fred Thompson. The Jack Daniels distillery is located in Tennessee, where he was a senator for nine years.
Here's the list that matches candidates to beverages that epitomize their campaigns:
Nothing symbolizes John McCain like a can of Pabst Blue Ribbon. PBR has been around for ages - just like McCain, 70. He calls himself a straight shooter who rides in a bus nicknamed "The Straight Talk Express."
Let's face it, when you pop the top on an ice-cold PBR, you know you're in for one heck of a night. PBR also has military ties like McCain. During World War II, cans were painted military green and were exclusively made for the troops because of tin rationing.
When the WC thinks about Barack Obama, we envision a bottle of Riesling wine. It's sweet and quite palatable for people to consume. If you have ever listened to the Illinois senator speak, you can make the connection. Also, younger people enjoy the taste of white wine compared to bitter red. Obama has rallied the youth vote and connected to younger voters.
Hopefully, just like a bottle of wine, Obama will get better with age. He has little experience, however, which has given his critics headaches like those that come from a three-day wine binge.
Like the Eagles song "Tequila Sunrise" says, "She wasn't just another woman." Hillary Clinton embodies a tequila sunrise. It's quite smooth but has some bite like Clinton does when the boys start ganging up on her. The drink also appeals to ladies, and she has received more than 50 percent of the female vote. A tequila sunrise is a familiar drink to most people, and everyone knows the Clinton name. The only thing is, after listening to Clinton speak, you feel similar to being hungover and have regrets and wonder why you had so many drinks the night before.
Please drink responsibly and vote responsibly.
