Steger moves up to seventh at Pinehurst

Junior Jared Steger finished with a share of seventh place, leading the Western Illinois men's golf team at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate.
Steger sat in 26th after the first day of competition. After a second round score of 73, he climbed up 13 spots into a tie for 13th. The final round proved to be the most successful one for the Bannockburn, Ill., native, who fired a 71 to climb into the Top 10 and finish in a tie for seventh place.
In a strong field of competition with the likes of Indiana, Leathernecks' sophomore Kyle Peterman finished with a 236 (82-79-75). Not far behind Peterman were sophomore Ryan Franks, who carded a 239 (81-82-76), and junior Jason Woll, who recorded a 241 (82-74-85). Rounding out the individual scoring for Western was junior Austin Lambert, registering a 254 (83-87-84).
The Leathernecks finished in 17th place with a combined score of 936 (322-308-306). Indiana claimed the team title at one-over par, finishing 24 strokes ahead of second-place Eastern Kentucky. Seth Brandon of Indiana took home the individual title with an even-par 216 for the tournament.
The Leathernecks meet up with Indiana again when they travel to Bloomington, Ind., for the Hoosier Invitational, March 29-30.
