The Leatherneck football squad held its first spring workout outside Saturday as the rain held off but temperatures were in the low 30s. The team went through a two-and-a-half hour practice session, the first of two helmets-only workouts to open the spring season.

"We could have been inside today like we had planned, but football is meant to be played in adverse conditions sometimes," said coach Don Patterson. "Our goal is to be a playoff team, and I'm sure the weather in December will be a lot like what we had today. We saw some great energy and enthusiasm out here today. The players would much rather be outside than in a gym, and we were able to get off to a great start.

"I was most impressed with the way we caught and threw the ball today. Obviously that is a little more difficult in less than ideal conditions."

The Leathernecks will continue with practice No. 2 Monday, again in helmets. The first practice in full pads is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
