The Western Illinois University Society of Professional Journalists will be sponsoring its annual Spring Journalism Day on March 31 at 3 p.m. at the Sandburg Theatre in the University Union.
The event will include discussions with current music professor Hank Bordowitz and head baseball coach Stan Hyman regarding their past experiences in entertainment journalism.
Hyman and Bordowitz have each gained extensive writing experience prior to their tenures at Western. Hyman, who began as a sports writer and music columnist for a local newspaper in Pennsylvania, went on to write stories on pop music for larger markets such as the Boston Globe, Philadelphia Inquirer, USA Today and the Rolling Stones.
During his stint with the Rolling Stones, Hyman was appointed to cover the band's 1982 "Tattoo U" tour, which was held primarily on the east coast. Hyman said that particular experience could be the most memorable highlight of his writing career.
"It was a great experience being on the road and interviewing stars such as Queen and Freddy Mercury while visiting the Montreal Forum and the Four Seasons hotel," Hyman said. "It was also rewarding to be able to travel with my dog around with the group across the country. It was a great time."
Along with this, Hyman was hired to interview rock legend David Bowie during the mid-'80s, when Bowie was on the road for his "Like to Dance" tour.
"While my time spent covering the Rolling Stones was my most enjoyable experience, my interview with David Bowie was probably the biggest interview I did in terms of notoriety and prestige. It was a good time as well," he added.
Bordowitz is a seasoned journalist who has written books involving Bob Marley and Billy Joel and articles about U2 and CCR for Playboy and Metal Mania. In addition, Bordowitz recently released his latest book, "Dirty Little Secrets of the Record Business: Why So Much Musi c You Hear Sucks."
The event will include talks about reporting and writing in music, entertainment and pop culture. Bordowitz and Hyman's own rock 'n' roll experiences and how the mainstream of music has evolved over the decades will also be featured at the event.
