'Winds split with SEMO and Upper Iowa

The Western Illinois women's tennis team bounced back from a 4-3 loss to Southeast Missouri last Saturday with a 7-0 defeat of Upper Iowa Sunday at Brophy Courts.
The Westerwinds (5-9) opened the weekend with a 4-3 loss at the hands of the Redhawks (5-8). The match was determined by the doubles point. Southeast Missouri took two of the three doubles matches by winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Sophomores Yana Meinert and Ashley Clark won at No. 3 doubles, defeating Elise Nattier and Taylor Orahood, 8-4, for their eighth win of the spring.
Western split the six singles matches, but it was not enough, as it needed to win four of the six matches after losing the doubles point. Junior Kim Lennartsson won at the No. 2 singles spot, defeating Drew Kristal, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Meinert added a singles win to her doubles victory after beating Nattier, 6-1, 7-5. Sophomore Courtney Brooks gave the Westerwinds their third singles win after sweeping Orahood, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6 singles.
On Sunday, Western bounced back with a 7-0 victory over Upper Iowa (5-7). Clark and Meinert won at No. 2 doubles (8-3), beating Mallory Cox and Erin Kelley, to move their doubles record to 9-6 on the spring season. The No. 1 doubles team of sophomore Amanda Griffin and freshman Kate Kennedy and the No. 3 doubles team of sophomore Stephanie Baumer and Brooks each earned doubles victories over the Peacocks.
In singles play, Meinert won her third match in a row, defeating Kelley, 6-2, 6-3. Baumer added a singles win, sweeping Faith Atherton, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6 singles. The Westerwinds also received singles victories from Griffin (No. 1, 6-0, 6-2), Clark (No. 2, 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (7)), junior Zi Wang (No. 3, 6-1, 6-1) and Kennedy (No. 4, 6-0, 6-1).
Western returns to play this Saturday when it hosts Chicago State and McKendree at Brophy Courts.
