SGA President Sam Pfister and Vice President Joe Lanane enjoy their last meeting.

The Student Government Association met Tuesday night to bid farewell to graduating seniors as it took part in the final meeting of the 39th Legislative Session.

Sam Pfister, SGA president, was the first to say goodbye, saying his experience was more than he could have asked for.

"I entered SGA three years ago, and I never thought I would get to this position and see the organization grow as much as it did," Pfister said. "It's been an honor being here and it's been a pleasure helping you guys out."

Vice president Joe Lanane was next to take the stand. He credited SGA's success to the strong ambition among the SGA senators.

"I really had a good time this year, and I really appreciate everything," he said.

Lanane also pointed out a few of the successful activities SGA took part in this past year, such as the first annual Taste of Macomb, the letter sent to the mayor regarding home rule and the creation of a new SGA logo.

"It's been a blast and I learned a lot through this," Lanane said. "It was nice to know how things worked on the other side of campus."

Senators-at-large Nicole Shipman and Tony Thomas also said goodbye, reflecting on their feelings before becoming official SGA members for the first time.

"When I first came to SGA, I was nervous about a lot of different things, but we were able to get over our differences and have fun as friends," Thomas said.

Shipman talked about her campaign to become a senator-at-large, stating that although the race was tight, she was glad to take the challenge.

"It's been an honor serving the students as senator-at-large," Shipman said. "When I came here I wanted to make some changes, and I feel that I have made changes since taking this position."

SGA Campaign Coordinator Tara Short, Senator Orterio Villa and senator-at-large Tabitha Wiggins were among the remaining graduating seniors. Both yielded their reports, simply stating "thank you."

In other business, SGA members took part in a moment of silence to remember the Virginia Tech shooting tragedy that took place one year ago.

"It was a very important event that affected many people; we can't just forget it after a year," Pfister said.

He added that the Virginia Tech tragedy is the "9/11" of the educational world.

Congratulations to SGA on a successful year. I just want to add that this is not all that went down at the meeting. The thing that sparked the most debate is not even mentioned in the article. (Continued…)
