The Western Illinois Bowling Teams are experiencing something that needs to be brought to the attention of the students, staff, and faculty. The team was recently informed that we will be losing our coach due to the fact that there will no longer be a salary for the position. These teams have represented the university very well over the years. The Men's Team has won three National Championships and has received nothing for the efforts. The Women's Team has finished third place numerous times and finished fifth at last years National Championships. Instead of supporting a great program, we are losing funding and coaching. The University has supported the team previously, but unfortunately this seems to be changing. When I walk into a bowling center for a collegiate competition, I am proud to say I am a Western Illinois University bowler, it is sad the school doesn't have that same pride for the bowling team.

That is because the "Bowling Team" is just a sport club, not a University sanctioned athletic team, if I understand it correctly. It's a student organization, so why should the university pay a coach for a student organization?

So, if I understand Jim correctly, there is not a single university student organization that receives funding from the school? National Collegiate titles have been won by these teams - just curious, how many WIU "sports" teams have won a National Championship?
Also, to the faculty member who informed the bowlers - If you don't like it, we're giving you plenty of notice if you want to transfer. (Continued…)

It shouldn't matter if the bowling team is just a club... they play division I like any other sport on campus. The fact is the bowling team shouldn't just be a club. (Continued…)
