Tracksters travel to Iowa City Saturday

Senior Mitch Thompson leads Summit League in the 110-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 14.51 seconds.

After earning Top 3 finishes at the 19th Annual Lee Calhoun Memorial, the Western Illinois track and field teams travel to Iowa City, Iowa, to participate in the Iowa Invitational Saturday.

Western is one of 10 teams scheduled to participate in the meet. Other teams include Summit League member South Dakota State, Bradley, Drake, Iowa, Iowa State, Illinois-Chicago, Northern Iowa, Wisconsin and Marquette. UIC and Marquette were participants in the Lee Calhoun Memorial.

Members of the Iowa women's track team attended the meet as well but only participated in the 1,500-meter run. Four of the 11 runners for the Hawkeyes finished in the Top 4 positions in the race.

Field events are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., with running events slated to start at 11:15 a.m.

Leading the Summit League

Seniors Mitch Thompson and Sean Delahunt have each recorded the best performance in their respective events in The Summit League. Thompson is leading the league in the 110-meter hurdles (14.51), with sophomore Tony Odele in second (14.84).

Delahunt has the best mark in the shot put, with a mark of 16.63m (54'06.75"). The throw is over one meter longer than his closest competitor, Carlos Valle from Southern Utah (15.25m (50'00.50")).

On the women's side, junior ChrisDell Harris has the top time in the 100-meter dash (11.87), and freshman Nichole Manning is tied for first in the pole vault with a jump of 3.80m (12'05.50").

Up Next

The next competition on the schedule for Western is the Drake Relays, April 24-26 in Des Moines, Iowa. The last meet before The Summit League Championships is May 3 when Western travels to Normal, Ill., to participate in the Illinois State Invitational.
