Junior Tim Chybicki stepped-up his performance in the javelin throw for the Western Illinois track and field team during the SIUE Twilight. The Mt. Prospect native sent the javelin 56.94m (186'10") for second place in the event and a personal-best throw that was almost four feet longer than his mark the week before.

Chybicki's career-best mark was one of 18 set by Western at the SIUE Twilight and helped the Leathernecks earn a third-place finish. The Westerwinds were propelled by underclassman to a third-place finish. The host Cougars claimed the top spot on both the men's and women's sides, with Eastern Illinois earning both second-place finishes.

"Tim was solid, but he is still ready for bigger throws," said head coach Mike Stevenson. "He had some really big throws in warm up and then tired to throw to big in competition and got excited. Once he learns to control his emotions, he will be able throw a lot farther."

Junior Josh Schupbach also had a career day in the javelin, with a throw of 43.14m (141'06"). The Rockford native bested his previous personal best by almost 11 feet.

The Leatherneck distance runners also continued to shine, with four personal-best times. The 5,000-meter run was a highlight for both the Leathernecks and the Westerwinds at the SIUE Twilight. Sophomore Eric Anerino and senior Beth Whalen each earned their team's lone first-place finishes in the event.

Anerino, a Naperville native bested his previous best in the race by over 40 seconds, finishing in 15:03.92 and landing in the No. 7 spot on Western's all-time list. Whalen, a native of Bettendorf, Iowa, earned her first-place finish with a time of 17:43.33.

"Eric ran really well and put himself on the top-10 list," said Stevenson. "His performance was one of the highlights for the day. Beth performs well all the time. Those two certainly did a great job."

Junior Jared Schmidt continued the personal-best streak by becoming the second member of Western's roster to finish the 1,500-meter run in under four minutes since 2004 and the second in as many weeks. The Liberty native ran the race in a personal-best time of 3:57.80, good for second place.
