The first game of the series was close and saw the 'Winds (8-28, 6-10 Summit) go into extra innings for the second time in the last three series. The score was tied at two until the bottom of the eighth when Amy Weideman of Centenary (31-23, 15-6 Summit) hit a grand slam to send the Ladies home with a win.
This repeats the trend of giving up big hits for the 'Winds pitching staff. Sophomore Lori Pankratz (4-9) suffered the loss in 7.2 innings, striking out four while allowing eight hits and three walks.
Freshman Beth Glitko led the offense in the first game going 1-for-4 with two RBIs in the loss.
Game two was similar to game one in the fashion that Western loss. Giving up multiple runs in an inning has haunted the 'Winds all season and once again proved to be detrimental. Coach Holly Van Vlymen talked about not giving up the big inning, but Western allowed six runs to cross the plate in the fourth.
This put the 'Winds down by a large deficit and Centenary went on to win the contest 7-1. Junior Courtney Jacobson (2-7) took the loss in three innings of work, allowing five hits and striking out five as well.
The third game of the series resulted in another loss. The 'Winds fell 2-1 in a low scoring affair. Freshman catcher Nikki Marinec went 3-for-3 with a double to lead the attack at the plate. Marinec went 5-for-10 over the weekend for the 'Winds.
Pankratz recorded her second loss of the series, striking out three in six innings of work. Senior Rachel Heagney drove in the lone run for the 'Winds in game 3.
Western will compete against Saint Louis Tuesday, in a double-header at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium at 3 p.m.
