Polly Radosh, chair for the Department of Women's Studies, has retired to become dean of SUNY-Geneseo, where she received her undergraduate education.

According to a university release, Aimee Shouse, currently associate professor of political science at Western Illinois University, will fill the position of interim chair for the Fall 2008 semester.

Shouse, who has been employed with Western since 1993, said she will serve the duties of the department chair until the College of Arts and Sciences dean Inessa Levi finds a permanent replacement.

"The women's studies department is fortunate to have Dr. Shouse as interim chairperson," Levi said. She added that Shouse's previous positions at Western, including acting director in the department, acting chairperson of political science and political science professor as well as other positions at the university "give her unique qualifications for (the role of interim chair).

"I am grateful to Dr. Shouse for agreeing once again to help the college and the women's studies department," Levi added.

"I'm going to be the chair for the next 11 months," Shouse said. "July 1 of next year, a permanent chair is to take over. Right now, there isn't enough time to search for a permanent replacement."

Shouse added that she would consider applying to fulfill the position permanently, but has not yet decided whether she wants to be the permanent chair.

Though she will miss teaching her political science courses, Shouse said she would still be involved in political science with her new position.

"I'll keep my hand in political science in terms of teaching," Shouse said, adding that she had several courses involving women in political science to teach as part of becoming interim chair.

"A lot of my research is with women in politics, so it fits well," she said.

Shouse will officially take over as department chair Aug. 1.
