Much of America has been buzzing about the story of Duke University freshman Miriam Weeks, better known to the porn community as Belle Knox.
Student by day, porn star by night is Knox’s alternative for trying to escape any financial burden that rising tuition costs force students all over the country to face.
Classy, right? Not really, but Knox is certain that her decision will have a positive effect and “pay off” in the long run.
Knox believes in her misguided decision to essentially let porn pay for school and feels that there is much to be gained in this field.
“My experience in porn has been nothing but supportive, exciting, thrilling and empowering,” Knox said.
Upon learning her identity, there has been a huge media backlash, but honestly, who in their right mind would not have seen that coming?
Knox’s real identity has only just recently been released as she has avoided giving out her real name as a way to maintain a sense of privacy.
Unfortunately for her, there is not a lot of room for privacy in the world of pornography.
Once you put yourself out there for anyone to see, there is no going back.
Therefore, it was only a matter of time before her identity would be revealed and allow the media to have a heyday with her story.
Knox’s decision to enter the porn industry leaves me to question what the aftermath will be when she is finished with school.
It is safe to say that once she put herself out there in a degrading manner such as this, the possibility of getting a job in her field of study after she finishes school gets slimmer with each film that she puts out.
It is just the way the professional world functions. Debt or no debt, once you allow yourself to be associated with something like porn, people will not forget.
It is also a very real possibility that the porn industry will just pull her in deeper and before she knows it, she will have an entire career worth of films behind her and school will have been for nothing.
Whatever happened to being a cashier or serving at a restaurant?
For millions of students all over the country, a story like this really sheds a negative light on what it is these students do for a part-time job.
It draws people to the conclusion that all students have this mentality and way of thinking.
This leads the older generations to draw a negative conclusion on just how hardworking a lot of these students are.
If there is any point that I want to get across, it is that the younger generation of college students are not doomed, and we do not all look to get by for nothing.
And most of all, there is still a traditional way of life for students.
Selling your body for a large chunk of cash may work for someone like Knox, but morality still has precedence for a vast majority of us.
I thoroughly believe that the media backlash is just the first step for Knox.

I agree with you. Although I do not know Miriam (and cannot judge her) I fear she's made a gigantic mistake which may haunt her and her family for decades.
